Music

While music is generally determined by taste, tradition, and suitability, there are some churches which must approve all music played or sung in the church. Some churches require that you hire their organist/pianist, and they may be unable or unwilling to play the music you have chosen; some churches also allow the organist the freedom to make the final decision on approval of all music played at the wedding even when church rules are not violated. The traditional wedding march is also not allowed in some few churches due to its secular nature. Be sure to check to see what restrictions apply.

If a song is sung during the lighting of the unity candle, you may want to pick a short one or use only part of one...it can become an incredible length of time standing there waiting for the song to be finished.

If "canned" music is used, be sure each singer has his/her tape ready at the correct spot, and labeled top side up so the person inserting tape can insure all goes smoothly..it is disconcerting to have to fast forward a tape to find the right music. Have someone test all equipment 1 hour before the wedding.

If music is played at the reception, be sure the volume is not loud enough to stop all conversation or endanger stained glass windows.

If special songs are desired during dancing (if applicable), discuss this with musicians before the event to be sure they know the music. Inform the musicians of the order of events at the rehearsal as well as the ceremony (you may want give them a shortened version of the director's worksheet)..they can, for instance take a break during the cutting of the cake, but need to be prepared for the first dance.
