Basic Plan (calendar)

6-12 MONTHS BEFORE THE WEDDING

Meet with the wedding official to determine requirements for pre-marital counseling.

Determine budget for both bride and groom.

Set date - consider vacation time, work schedule, availability of location, etc...plan alternate date in the event of conflicts. DO NOT SIGN ANY CONTRACTS OR AGREEMENTS UNTIL YOU ARE SURE OF YOUR DATE AND TIME - MOST DEPOSITS ARE NOT REFUNDABLE. Don't feel foolish if you have to call several times about a date while trying to work out details.

Reserve all locations, and service people (photographer, caterer, florist, etc.) DO NOT BE PRESSURED INTO SIGNING CONTRACTS WITHOUT ALLOWING YOURSELF TIME TO COMPARE PRICES, QUALITY OF WORK, RECOMMENDATIONS, ETC. IF YOU MUST SIGN A CONTRACT ON THE FIRST CONTACT, THERE MAY BE A REASON THEY DO NOT WANT YOU TO COMPARE.

Determine size of guest list.

Choose wedding party...remembering that this is a time for CLOSE friends to share in your happiness. The size of the wedding party should be determined solely by friendship. If the bride is really close to 9 ladies who went though school together and she wants all of them and the groom is a shy loner with 3 really close friends, then there should be 9 bridesmaids and 3 groomsmen. To ask someone to be in your wedding simply for symmetry turns the wedding into a staged production and not a celebration. Brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, future brothers-in-law, and future sisters-in-law should automatically be asked to be in the wedding.

Determine color scheme. The bride should remember that this is HER day and the colors chosen should be colors that compliment her. The color chosen will not be the best color for all of the bridesmaids, therefore only the bride should be considered. As you will be surrounded by this color on the day of the wedding, choose a color that makes you look radiant...remembering that the stronger the color, the more dramatic the photos will look.

Choose and order wedding dress and veil, or select fabric and dressmaker.

Choose and order bridesmaid's dresses and accessories or select fabric and dressmaker.

Make appointment for physical exam, and discuss birth control if desired.

Arrange leave of absence from work.
